There is a certain joy from subscribing to a magazine written for people who are serious about something when you are only sort of marginal with it (Yes, yes, there are 100 self-deprecating sex related jokes just waiting to be made there, but no that isn't it...) I subscribe to Bass Player magazine and I LOVE IT!!! I take lessons, and I am lousy, but I like reading the magazine anyway. It makes me feel like ... I am part of that community, although I am not, and would never represent myself as a bass player... to an actual.. bass player.

I have watched the first 6 episodes of Maester Negi Magi (or some such thing) with english subtitles. I am enjoying it so far. I saw an ad for it at the beginning of Samurai 7 (awesome anime) and I decided to find it and download it. It is about a 10 year magician who becomes a teacher at an all girls school. there is a lot of fanservice in this one. Go look up that term in wiki if you don't know it already. I had to rely on my friend supplying me with the term... it's awesome. Well in keeping with the anime is for perverts theme... there are a good number of panty shots and accidental.. "whoops I fell on top of you" moments, etc. It's pretty funny, and features a talking ermine eventually. What I like about this, is that the ads showed all the girls as being special things too, like the boy is a mage.. there is a vampire, a robot, a ghost... a demon hunter... Well... until the 6th episode, NONE of that comes out except the mage part. For some reason I really like that everything builds sort of gradually, instead of all being dumped on you at the beginning.. so.. good job pervy anime!

I actually started reading a book, since the internet just makes me feel stupid sad and pathetic now... YAY internet! I am reading the book "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" by Susannah Clarke. I really like it so far, but it is HUGE and I am not very far into it yet. It is a book I asked for and got for Christmas last year.

I have been listening to the (old)Bauhaus song Third Uncle a LOT lately.. awesome song.. go listen to it... seriously.. just awesome.

Ok... this is a lame excuse for a post (LEFAP), but I thought it was funny. It is from Warren Ellis's nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E which is pretty funny most of the time.

Aug. 18th, 2006 @ 03:06 pm stuff... awesome stuff .. mostly
Recently finished watching the Anime series Samurai 7, which is based on Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, which is awesome, of course. The anime looks good, the story is great, and includes a major plotline not from the original, which is very cool, as well as being set in a world that has giant hovering war machines and all, but is essentially the exact period the original was set in.. only with Machine Samurai. The characterization is great, and the action is fantastic...

My new favorite thing to listen to is Gnarls Barkley, especially Smiley Faces and Crazy. It is way more awesome than I thought it would be.. and I love it. I should pay attention to what Emma listens to more often...

Saw Scary Movie 4, and compared to date movie it was Citizen fucking Kane. I laughed a lot. It wasn't like.. a classic or anything, but that franchise has produced some pretty funny moments, and over all watchable enough films.

My favorite "Song where the original is 100 times awesomer than it's better received remake..." is Bruce Springsteen's Blinded by the light... I present here, it's amazing lyrical awesomeness.. seriously better in all ways than Manfred Mann's earth band... I have actually pared it down some to include my favorite parts, and cut out some of the slightly less amazing parts... all this is done to just awesome music, by an of course awesome band...

Im not booing.. I'm yelling Bruuuuce )

Aug. 12th, 2006 @ 09:50 pm I'm not dead yet
Ok.. there's this thing where you put off doing something for so long that you are sort of embarrassed to do it when you finally feel like it, and therefore you put off doing it even longer. I get that a lot, and of course you understand that when I say you.. I am not really referring to YOU (my presumably 1 friend left who might look at this...) I mean me.

I have been on vacation for the past 2 weeks, and it has been fun, although I have done nothing productive, and not even anything particularly fun.. well maybe a little, but still...

I spent the first week, with my girls, on my parents farm. They built a new house and have to tear down the old house that embodies nearly every memory of my Mom's parents that I have. As hard as it is for me, it is a million times worse for my Mom of course, as it was the house she was born and raised in... etc. So we helped her get ready for a yard sale there, and helped her sell stuf that weekend. My Sister and her kids were there for a bunch of it, which was nice.

I am allergic to actual work, so I ended up coordinating the meals while I was there. It was pretty fun, as I love to cook, but now HATE to cook at home apparently. So I made a ground beef, cheese and mushroom crustless "quiche", steaks and sauteed mushrooms, pork "shoulder steaks" done like country style ribs, fresh grown corn from the field.. fresh potatoes, and the awesome macaroni salad I make now.. which is awesome. So lots of good food, visiting with family... some work, but not too much, and most importantly... I downloaded a shitload of stuff using their internet connection.. which is faster than mine at home.. oh yeah.. played cards with my mom.. etc... it was all nice, but not as... vacationy relaxing as I wanted...

I took the kids to see Pirates otc II, and we went to a tortilla place, and 2 comic shops while I was there.. That was nice.

This past week was good, but not much happened. We saw ZOOM yesterday, and it was AWESOME!!! I loved it so much. It is vaguely Galaxy Quest ish.. to compare it to Tim Allen fare.. and of course a bit Sky High... yes it is fairly... standard... but I still loved it, and it made me cry.. which is of course the easiest thing on earth to do. It was funny, and good, it was anticlimactic in the end.. but it sort of had to be. It was a respectably short length, and a great movie to see with my girls.

The bad news from this week is that my Cat squirt had to be put to sleep because he was deteriorating, and we took him to the vet and found he had cancer in his kidneys. We are now petless for the first time in more than 17 years I think, and we need to stay that way. It is really strange adjusting to not having a pet. like I have trouble having the door to the basement closed since we couldn't do that before now... We'll be ok, but it is tough. He was 14 years old, and he was just an awesome pet.

I will write more some time

You expect me to just let you hit it
But will you still respect me if you get it
Nelly Furtado - "Promiscuous"

The sun, it isn't hiding when it sets on you
It's not a coward like me, and i know that it's true
Waiting for the darkness now is all i can do
It's all i can do
Raconteurs - "Yellow Sun"

I love that line from Promiscuous, and I walk around delivering it all day long. Sometimes I will just say it out of the blue (the first line anyway)

Yellow sun is better in all ways than Promiscuous. It is also better than Steady as she goes. I seriously recommend the disk (Broken Boy Soliders). My favorite songs from it are probably:
Intimate Secretary, Yellow Sun, Broken Boy Soldiers, Steady as she goes, in the order they are listed there.

Current Music: Rompe(remix) - Daddy Yankee
Culture update:

Scott Pilgrim - It's packaged like Manga, small trade paperback comic by Bryan Lee O'malley. It is cute and funny and fun, with lot's and lots of likeable characters, and sort of bizarre unexpected stuff in it. I highly recommend it.

Cheaper by the dozen 2 - Not great, not terrible.. my kids liked it a lot.. I was.. mostly indifferent.

Date Movie - I want to like this sort of movie, and I am very forgiving of the whole.. spoof genre, even though there are an awful lot of poorly done duds out there.. The thing is.. there is usually at least SOME funny in those duds.. Date Movie was (with one exception) irredeemable. Alyson Hannigan!!! there are enough seens of her hot self to make me happy, but I am retarded that way so it doesn't count. Otherwise it sucked, and was unfunny.

Bruce Springsteen - The Seeger Sessions - I like this a lot... but... I am not sure how the seeger name gets on it.. or even how folky it really is. I think Bruce is well.. I don't know. I love some of the songs, and the band is great. but it isn't Pete to me... it is hardly Pete inspired in my book. Pete to me is just pete with a banjo, sometimes sounding rough, sometimes sounding beautiful. Always sounding.. like "the real thing". I think there is just way too much to the arrangements for my taste. It's pretty and all.. but it has all been done so much better... There is better bruce, better pete.. etc. I still like it a lot, and actually bought the "hard copy cd" and have watched the dvd part of it as well (and enjoyed it).

The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers - Jack White's "Supergroup"...? I love the White Stripes.. I loved Jack White's stuff from Cold Mountain... I'm clearly smitten with the fellow... Well.. regardless... The group the whole group.. is fantastic.. I have, in all fairness only given it one listen so far, but I plan to listen to it more (am doing so .. now even...) I bought this one .. one piece at a time using free song credits on ITUNES.. I finally used up all the ones my wife had gotten as some sort of credit card rewards thing... It took much longer than I thought it would to use up all the credits.

I also have some money on my account from a card I bought.. somewhere... so I bought the Shakira Video for Hips Don't Lie. It was truly a banner day.. It was like the the first moon landing of um... er um.. uh.. something ... For no reason I understand.. The most popular song in the world EVARRRRR... took forever to end up on Itunes, and then for ever ever before the video was available. Don't worry, I alternate um uh and such as to avoid repetitive motion disorders... (I'm probably kidding)

During my download fest, I also got Rompe(Daddy Yankee) and Yeah! (usher lil john and ludacris).. I do NOT know what is wrong with me... but um.. shut up.. don't judge me...

Really good ribeyes on the grill (soy sauce worcestershire sauce, montreal steak seaoning)

Salad (bag.. greener selection or some such)

"homemade" garlic bread (Frsh baked italian bread from the grocery store with butter and garlic and a parmesan romano mix oh, and a little Penzy's Brady street cheese sprinkle)

Dessert - Fresh baked mini M&M cookies..still warm... with a scoop of Breyers Caramel Fudge Swil ice cream.. or something like that, with a teeny bit of caramel topping on it.. very.. chain restaurant-esque dessert.

It was good, but the steak was amazing.. I got 3 individual.. fancy angus blah blah blah steaks from Giant. My new understanding is that you pay for the fat in the steak... Cheap cuts have every scrap of fat removed, along with the flavor and lusciousness it provides... expensive cuts they may actually leave a little fat on...

My girls are watching Karate Dog on ABC Family... John Voight is totally having a martial arts battle with a dog right now

I love "Ten Things I Hate about you". I have a certain affection for the teen movie genre... warts and all, but I really like this one in particular.

"...and I'll get to sleep at night... The deep slumber of someone whose daughters aren't out being impregnated..." *sigh*

There's some good stuff in there.

Let's see I covered some of this elsewhere, but I am psyched about the look of the ghost rider movie... as well as My Super Ex Girlfriend... Also The next Pirates of the carribean looks bad, but the main characters.. of course.. look awesome, and I want to see it anyway. I LOVE the look and feel of the "fast and the furious" trailers. I love to see them, but I have no interest in the movie AT ALL.

I bought a bunch of comics today, I had Sushi, I sang in church, and I am doing a teeny bit of cleanup.. oh I also played some of the X3 movie game for ps2 (it sucks.. sort of... I will elaborate later)

May. 28th, 2006 @ 10:05 am 1980's punk culture female director mini film fest...
Last night I watched Smithereens and Suburbia

stark.. er uh bleak... I dunno.. whatever it was, I enjoyed Suburbia (Penelope Spheeris, 1984) way more than I enjoyed Smithereens (Susan Seidelman, 1982). Both were good enough, but Smithereens was mostly boring. It was sort of like um.. Pat Benetar walking around missing the point and being too hip or too cool and too self absorbed for her own good. I don't know, I could have gotten the point in just a sort of short film. There's the super hip self absorbed chick... The sort of nice guy from out in naive normal america., the Rocker that she wants (who is in no better situation than anyone else, and is played by Richard Hell of the band Television...), some hookers, a pimp, a bunch of sort of normal people that are kind of fed up having to support her, etc... not much really happens, and as far as character development, we kind of fully understand each character as soon as they are introduced...

I enjoyed Suburbia, which had a 1984 version of Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers in it. It was dark, but I sort of loved it regardless. I could have done without the beginning sequence, but there WAS a reason for it, so I understand I guess. It isn't really apologetic, it doesn't go overboard to make us too sympathetic (well I guess it does try to some degree, and it succeeds to some degree). I liked this better than Repo Man, which is a logical edition to the collection here, even though it is less... realistic... obviously... but it fits the era and genre more or less - ish) Suburbia is about a big gang/family of punks living in a condemned house in ... Los Angeles? Suburbia... Their existence is bleak, but they don't work too hard to change it. As a kid I would have viewed this movie differently, but now.. well I am old, but I still really really liked it. I absolutely must See Decline of Western Civilization also by Spheeris, but a documentary on the punk music scene.. back in the day... but it doesn't seem to be on DVD.. well I haven't looked all that hard.

OK.. Food network is re-running a pastry competition.. and I mean just a sugar competition really. I had to post this because it made me laugh each time they played this part.. They have to use a bunch of different sugar techniques.. There is a guy who says.. and I swear this is true... "I have never blown a giraffe before" later I am pretty sure the same person.. I think... talks about "blowing a dolphin" I would.. If I did such things with sugar... quickly learn to always word those things some other way.. Like.. "I have never made a blown sugar giraffe before" right... I mean... how could the phrase " I've never blown a giraffe before" which.. I haven't either.. but I've never even thought about it before actually.. I have a feeling this guy has thought about it... make it past editing?

May. 22nd, 2006 @ 09:34 am Deliverance 2006 - Junior Camping trip edition
Current Mood: worn out
Current Music: banjo in the distance
We took our junior girl scout troop camping this weekend. Everything went pretty well. I am exceptionally sun burned, but that's fine. We got to the horse ranch, got our camp set up 3 giant tents, and one smaller tent for me. The place had a bathroom with running water, etc. which was good, most of the girls were really good. We ate lunches we had packed.

We went to the pond and fished, well... everyone got several tries casting and reeling in. There was no chance of catching anything, but it was still nice, and they enjoyed it.

After fishing the girls went to do badgework, and learn what they needed to know for riding. The first group went out, and the second group went to start prep for dinner. The first group came bace, and several of the girls had been run into branches and had some pretty nast scrapes on their faces. Not everyone had fun, but most did. The first group finished pre for dinner. When the second group came back, we had dinner spaghetti, bread, salad, and brownies, which were made from a box and mixed in a zip lock, then cooked in a box oven.. which is a cardboard box covered in aluminum foil with hot charcoal in a pie plate as it's heat source. We made the oven a few weeks ago. The spaghetti was cooked on a coleman camp stove.

That evening the girls all went into Harpers Ferry for a ghost tour, which they enjoyed. I cleaned up some of our supplies, and started our campfire. We had s'mores when they got back, then the girls went to bed, and we sat around the fire talking for a while. It was nice.

The next day we had a few emotional blow ups, but everything got packed fine, we had sandwiches for lunch, then eventually set out to go caonoeing on the shenendoah. well... the wind was so strong, that we had awful awful problems, and many of us were fine with conoeing, and knew how to do it, and we made just enough progress to strand ourselves in the water with no guides, and no real areas conducive to getting out of the river. We had 3 canoes capsize. Everyone was ok. Everyone related to me by blood ended up in the water. It was sort of awful, but in hindsight... everything was ok, and sort of funny. I felt responsible for the trip, but everyone was ultimately ok. It was tough when my canoe went over, with my 6 year old in it, but she came through like a trooper, and floated the way she was supposed to, even though she was scared.we got to the shore, then eventually back in the canoe. It took us 3 hours to barely get halfway on what should have been an hour and a half. We were finally rescued after insisting the company send someone for us. I may detail it later, because it was really sort of funny and interesting... so ultimately we were several hours late getting home, but all the parents were understanding. Of the 3 canoes that went over, my 12 year old and her best friend had the most fun capsizing. they popped out of the water giggling... I am not certain that they didn't flip it over more or less intentionally... We were all looking tired and worried and annoyed at the very end of things, except my oldest and her friend who looked like they were going to burst out laughing. We got back to the conoe place, and got everyone a soda, and dished out some trail mix, and everyone was happy , and everyone had a good time on the trip, as a whole...

I feel like crap, and am being killed by allergies, but I am ok enough. It was really pretty fun.

Ok...

1. Coke Blak - it has the swoosh over the a, which I assume works like an unlaut, which I think means it should be pronounced Coke Blech... Having said that.. it is way too expensive, but the taste isn't bad.. It tastes like.. Coke... but with a coffee aftertaste... not bad.. but my favorite part of it is the sort of old coke bottle shaped 8 ounce glass bottle... yeah.. I know. I won't get it again, but I will drink it when it is given to me.

2. Prince of Tennis - This is an anime series, and in the first 5 episodes, is really light on real character development, and everything (almost everything) takes place on the tennis court. I like it for some reason... Which is uncharacteristic of me since it is not only a sports thing... but a tennis thing too.

3. Downloading Anime "Fan Subs" - This is my new favorite thing to do... They are Japanese cartoons that people get and do the subtitles for on their own. It's pretty amazing.

4. Mezzo DSA - Another Anime, and I really like the action sequences in it. I need to watch more of it... but I pretty much like it. The lead is a spunky fighting machine who does a variety of not exactly good guy tasks, and kicks serious ass at least once per episode. It is a follow up to a Hentai called Mezzo Forte, which was to me sort of like the Bob Guccione Jr Caligula (which featured Malcome MacDowell, and Peter O'toole I believe.. and Peter Ustinov.. pretty sure.. top notch movie.. with gratuitous porn laid over the top of it... one never needs to see anything but the R rated version of this...(caligula)... In the two episode cartoon Porn Mezzo Forte, it is a really good fun action adventure, with two ridiculously gratuitous... cartoon sex scenes that affect plot almost not at all... One of them is a throw-away dream sequence even.. LAME-O , but the non cartoon porn part is actually pretty neat! You can find versions out there with the sex removed.. MEZZO Forte is just 2 episodes I believe.. But Mezzo DSA is not porn, and runs longer at least 13 eps.

5. Shrimp and spaghetti with a Chipotle butter Lime sauce..
2 pound bag.. frozen 21/25 shrimp.
2 limes
1 really small onion (or a quarter of a bigger one...)
minced garlic
Chipotle chili powder
olive oil
butter (almost a stick)
box of thin spaghetti

thaw and peel and dry the shrimp.. drizzle with a little olive oil.. dash with some chipotle powder and mix with 2 tsp garlic. Saute up your finely chopped onion in olive oil, with some more garlic, and any dry seasonings you want.. salt and pepper.. chipotle.. etc.. I believe seasoning the onions is critical to getting the flavor distributed in your dish. Put the shrimp in your pan and sautee till pretty much done.. add onions back and finish cooking... drain olive oil off.. add butter, add more chipotle powder, and squeeze 1 1/2 - 2 limes worth of juice into it... toss into cooked and drained spaghetti.. and voila!!

5. My new guilty pleasure songs...
Sean Paul - Temperature
Shakira - My hips don't lie
maybe something else.. hmm... see.. I am man enough to admit when I am hooked on really bad songs...
